In the semester project A NEW CURRICULUM we will explore the structures that shape teaching and learning spaces in (design) education and can open up future worlds but also close them off. Historically, aesthetic education has always claimed to bring about social change – the only question is: What is aesthetic in the first place? And who mediates what to whom? According to sociologist Hartmut Rosa, the university is a place where students can enter into resonance with the world – a place where we can learn that the world concerns us and that we have an agency in shaping our world. This seminar will focus on education in the context of design, design and its often socially transformative aspirations. Building on your own experiences, we will explore the thoughts of a number of scholars, designers and activists on design education. We will turn to social utopian proposals from the 1920s as well as contemporary ideas that focus on intersectional feminist and decolonial perspectives.
The project will focus on the questions:
What is the transformatvepotential of design/ design education? What foundations are we laying here for our society? How do we want to learn, live, work now and in the future? But also: What do we want to learn? How do we want to learn and from whom?

Im Semesterprojekt A NEW CURRICULUM werden wir die Strukturen erforschen, die Lehr- und Lernräume im (Design-)Studium prägen und zukünftige Welten eröffnen aber auch verschließen können. Ästhetische Bildung hatte historisch betrachtet immer auch den Anspruch gesellschaftliche Veränderungen zu bewirken – stellt sich nur die Frage: Was ist überhaupt ästhetisch? Und wer vermittelt hier an wen? Die Hochschule ist, so behauptet der Soziologe Hartmut Rosa – ein Ort an dem Studierende ein In-Resonanz-Treten mit der Welt ermöglicht werden kann – ein Ort an dem gelernt werden kann, das uns die Welt etwas angeht und wir sie gestalten können. In diesem Seminar sollen also Bildung im Zusammenhang mit Gestaltung, Design und ihr oftmals gesellschaftstranformierender Anspruch im Fokus stehen. Aufbauend auf euren eigenen Erfahrungen werden wir uns mit den Gedanken einer Reihe von  Wissenschaftler:innen, Gestalter:innen und Aktivist:innen zur Designausbildung beschäftigen. Wir werden uns dabei sowohl sozial-utopischen Vorschlägen aus den 1920er-Jahren zuwenden als auch zeitgenössischen Ideen, bei denen intersektional-feministische und dekoloniale Perspektiven im Fokus stehen.
Im Mittelpunkt des Projekts stehen die Fragen:
Welches transformatorische Potential liegt im Design-/Studium? Welche Grundlagen schaffen wir hier für unsere Gesellschaft? Wie wollen wir jetzt und in der Zukunft lernen, leben, arbeiten? Aber auch: Was wollen wir lernen? Wie wollen wir lernen und von wem?

Publication

As final project the students decided to design and print a collaborative publication which will be available open access soon.
The publication contains documentation of various workshop formats and mediation methods which we tested out during the semester as well as essays which were written in the course of the connected Design Theory seminar.
